What are daily active members?
Daily active members is the count of distinct members who use the app on a given day, often reported against the monthly figure as a ratio to show how much of the member base the product reaches regularly.
Borrowed from an industry with different goals
This metric comes from consumer software, where daily use is the product and attention is the revenue. A fitness business does not sell attention. It sells results, and results come from training a few times a week.
So a low daily figure is not automatically a problem. A member who trains four times a week, logs each session and ignores the app otherwise is an excellent member who looks disengaged against a social media benchmark.
When it does tell you something
It becomes meaningful once you know what your app is for. If you have built daily habits, nutrition logging or a community, daily use is the stated intent and the number measures whether the intent is landing.
If the app is primarily bookings and programs, the honest measure is weekly rather than daily, and tracking the daily figure mostly generates anxiety about a number that was never the goal.
Watch the trend and the composition
A single figure is close to useless. The trend over months is worth watching, and so is the split between members who use the app most days and members who have effectively stopped, because a stable average often conceals one group growing and another leaving.
The second view is the one that leads to action, because it identifies people rather than describing a population.
Questions operators ask
Four that come up on almost every call about daily active members.
Only if you built it for daily use. Habits, nutrition logging and community justify a daily target. Bookings and programs do not, and chasing daily opens in that case usually means adding notifications members did not want.
Consumer benchmarks are the wrong reference point here. A better approach is to decide how often your product is supposed to be used, then measure against that. Your own trend is the signal worth acting on.
For most gym and coaching apps, yes. Training happens on a weekly rhythm, so a weekly measure matches the behaviour the business actually wants and does not penalise a member for taking a rest day.
They should be looked at together and they are not the same. App use without attendance may mean a member browsing rather than training. Attendance without app use means the platform is not part of their routine, which is a missed opportunity rather than a crisis.
