What members touch

What is member onboarding?

Member onboarding is the first session a member has with your app: the questions you ask, the plan they receive, and whether they reach a first useful moment before their attention runs out.

Why week one decides everything

Most fitness apps lose the majority of the members they will ever lose in the first seven days. A member who completes one session in week one behaves very differently from one who installs, browses and closes. Onboarding is the only part of the product that every single member experiences, which makes it the highest-traffic screen you own.

The mistake operators make is treating onboarding as data collection. Every question you ask is a chance to lose someone, so each one has to earn its place by changing what the member sees next.

What onboarding should produce

A member should finish onboarding holding a plan, not a confirmation message. That means the questions map to a real branching decision: training days available, equipment or club access, experience, injuries or movements to avoid, and the outcome they are chasing.

Where a coach is involved, the onboarding answers should land in the same review queue as check-ins, so a human sets the first plan rather than an algorithm guessing.

Questions operators ask

Four that come up on almost every call about member onboarding.

If a question does not change the plan the member receives, it does not belong in onboarding. Most operators can get to a useful first plan in under two minutes. Anything you merely want for reporting can be collected later, once the member has a reason to stay.

In a coaching business, a coach. The first plan is the clearest signal a member gets about whether anyone is paying attention. Automation can prepare the draft and route it, but a person should press send.

It varies by model, but the number worth watching is not installs or sign-ups, it is the share of new members who complete a first session within seven days. Improving that single number usually moves retention more than any new feature.

The shape is the same, the inputs differ. A chain needs club selection, access method and class preferences. A coaching brand needs coach assignment and intake detail. Both should end with a plan in hand.
