What is nutrition coaching?

Nutrition coaching is the human layer over a nutrition product: somebody reviewing what a member reported, adjusting targets, answering questions and holding the member accountable, as opposed to software that simply issues a plan and leaves them to it.

The part members pay for

Meal plans and food logging are commodities. Several free apps do both competently. What members pay for is somebody noticing. A plan that nobody reviews is a document, and documents do not change behaviour.

This is the same economic logic that applies to training. The software is the delivery mechanism and the coach is the product, which means the platform should be built to make coaching time efficient rather than to replace it.

Making it scale without hollowing it out

A coach reading every food entry for a hundred members is not a business. What scales is structure: periodic check-ins rather than continuous review, a dashboard that surfaces only the members who need attention, templated responses for the questions that repeat, and adjustment rules the coach approves rather than calculates.

Done well, a coach can carry a far larger roster while every member still experiences a human reply. Done badly, the business either loses money per member or quietly stops reading.

Know where the line is

General nutrition guidance for a general-population member is widely permitted. Prescribing for a diagnosed condition is usually restricted to registered professionals, and the boundary varies by jurisdiction. In Australia the title dietitian is protected in practice through professional accreditation, and claims about treating conditions attract regulatory attention.

Build the product to stay inside the line: screening at onboarding, scope stated plainly in the member's terms, coach guidance on what not to answer, and a referral route that is easier to use than improvising.

Questions operators ask

Four that come up on almost every call about nutrition coaching.

It can replace the arithmetic and the admin, and it has not replaced the noticing. The measurable difference between a reviewed plan and an unreviewed one is adherence, and adherence is the only thing that produces results.

It depends almost entirely on how much of the work the platform absorbs. With check-ins on a schedule, a dashboard that flags only the members who need attention, and templates for repeat questions, the number is several times what it is without them.

If you intend to work with members who have medical conditions, yes, or a referral relationship with one. For general-population coaching, a certified coach working within a clearly stated scope is the common and accepted arrangement.

A target, a plan, a simple way to report back, and a visible human reply. Everything else is optional. Products that add analysis faster than they add responses tend to look sophisticated and retain worse.
